Friend of TechAttack, Vinot finally has the Pebble smartwatch shipped to him last week. He was among the folks who backed the Kickstarter campaign May of last year. After much delay in manufacturing among other things, it’s nice to know that they’re finally delivering the watch to backers even though to back a project on Kickstarter doesn’t mean you’re buying the device.
To quickly run through the specifications, bullet points below are what you’ll be getting with the Pebble. Note that instead of the proprietary E Ink technology, Pebble opted for an e-paper display instead.
* Load apps using Bluetooth (cable provided only for charging)
* 144 x 168 pixel display black and white e-paper
* Bluetooth 2.1+ EDR and 4.0 (Low Energy)
* 4 buttons (back, up, down, select)
* Vibrating motor
* 3 axis accelerometer with gesture detection
* Distribute apps via Pebble watchapp store
* 7-day battery life (maybe 5 days in real-life use)
Vinot shelled out US$130 in total (RM393.71): US$115 to back the project, and US$15 for international shipping. Surprisingly SIRIM did not block shipment to Malaysia probably due to the flat packaging design. SoyaCincau discovered a local shopping site accepting preorders for the Pebble, however they’re charging RM530 for that. In fact, you can even preorder yourself through Pebble itself for US$150 with shipping costs possibly the same at US$15, making it just US$165 in total (RM499.70). That’s a RM30 difference.
